Alder- full sound, even tone, good sustain
Ash (swamp, light)- warm , sweet sustain, singing quality
Ash (northern, heavy)- punchy, bright tone, long sustain
Basswood/Poplar- light weight, full round low end, smooth high end
Mahogany- warm tone, full soft sustain
Maple- midrange kick, good sustain
Add a maple top to mahogany to increase brightness and bite
Basswood and alder-for sustain without fuzziness, clean sound without distortion, light weight
Bass Guitars
Ash- big bass tone, huge sustain
Mahogany- rich deep lows, long sustain
Redwood- smooth even sounding without excessive presence or lows
Walnut- warm lows, mids, smooth presence
Wenge- sizzling presence on tops, good sub lows
Mahogany and Maple- meaty big tone, added high end
Mahogany and Walnut- tonal balance and resonance
Maple and Alder- crisp highs, smooth punchy mids, warm lows
